The reason I said I’d be willing to cut them ALL some slack (Dem and Repub alike) is because I am a tax accountant, and I understand the process.
Every year, the Wall Street Journal has a contest for tax preparers. The Journal provides a basic set of facts and circumstances and asks several different firms to prepare a 1040 based on those facts and circumstances. Every single year, the different firms calculate a different tax! If there are seven firms in the contest, you’ll have seven different tax calculations. This is due to the complexity of the tax code.
One of my former bosses (probably the smartest person I’ve ever met) once said, "Every tax return is wrong. It’s just a question of “how wrong.”
Excellent point DB4D, I was going to state the code is very complex myself, but you have beaten me to it.
Having said that, the one they get busted on regularly that is “clearly” an evasion of taxes is the domestic help or nanny money (often paid to an illegal). That one really agravates me.
When my child was young we were lucky enough to be able to afford a person to come to our house every day, but the peripheral taxes that went with it were a stretch for us.
All of our friends in similar situations were calling their caretaker a “contractor” and skipping the tax obligation. Most of the employees were willing to have the extra money.
My family prepared taxes professionally and always stressed the importance of paying the taxes, so we did what we were supposed to.
The caretaker is now on social security and in ill health. The years we paid the proper taxes were a big help for her benefits when she was old enough to retire.
I cheat on my taxes, it’s the American way. I don’t think I’m alone.
